NIGER and BURKINA FASO: Project for Farmer Training

Lifestock Conducted Train-the-Trainer Courses

The goal of this project, which incorporated both Niger and Burkina Faso, was to train veterinarians and other animal health workers for disseminating information about disease control downstream to small farmers.  We delivered a two-day workshop in each country, and all in French.  An important aspect of the course was to explain that smallholders had to be trained to report on diseases in their flocks and herds as it was impossible for government veterinarians to see all the animals in their areas.

We produced and distributed two important learning tools to each participant: our LifeStock manual called A Field Manual of Animal Diseases by Syndromes in French, along with a French translation we made of a Facilitators’ Guide for conducting downstream courses.

All of our Field Manuals are published on polymer paper for longevity. The professionals practiced adult learning techniques, and discussed effective methods for disseminating information in a low-literacy setting. At the end of each workshop, participants created plans for downstream training across Niger and Burkina Faso.

This project was funded by the US Agency for International Development through the Livestock Systems Innovation Laboratory located at the University of Florida.
